This commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?” (Deuteronomy 30:11-12)
I think it is fair to say that, for centuries, many people have felt they must look to pastors, theologians and the like to understand the Scriptures. It’s easy to see why, considering that large universities and theological schools abound throughout the world. Their very existence implies that one must go to an institution of higher learning if they are to grasp the complexities of God’s Word. The reality, however, is this path to understanding is unnecessary — God makes His Word accessible and understandable to all His people –- that is, if they have a heart to search the Scriptures. As Moses said, it isn’t so mysterious that its meaning is beyond our reach, even though we’ve tried to make it that way.
In the heathen mystery religions, to attain understanding, one has to strive to unravel great secrets and abstract, esoteric teachings. In time, if one is enlightened enough, they may garner wisdom according to the wisdom of men. Where the Word of God is concerned this is not the case. I’m not going to pretend that there aren’t some mysterious topics in Scripture (e.g. prophecies in Daniel and Revelation), however, when it comes to instruction in how to live life, God’s commands are common sense. The problem arises when it comes to application -– put simply, our flesh doesn’t like what He has to say.
In short, Scripture doesn’t have to be confusing like theology some times is. Remember; theology is the study of God quite often subjected to a man’s opinion. But God’s Word is intended to speak to the heart of man more than to the mind. Therefore, faith is the critical element when it comes to living according to the Word of God. As Moses said, you don’t have to go up to heaven to find its meaning; you don’t have to journey across the sea to find it. The Word and its power is as close as being in your mouth and in your heart –- exactly where it is supposed to be.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
