Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved. Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting. (Psalm 93:1-2)
If simply looking on the surface of current affairs and the declining condition of the world, the casual observer might conclude that mankind is in control of destiny. Chaos and corruption being as prevalent as it is, many find it difficult to think that God is still in control if they believe there is a God in the first place. Nevertheless, we know that He has not abdicated His Throne nor has He abandoned His will and purpose for His Creation. True, He permits men to choose their course and allows them to inherit the consequences. But throughout Scripture we see how He always acts to ensure that His will for Creation continues because, as the psalmist said, His purpose for the world is established.
In the days of Noah, the earth was corrupted as a result of mankind’s widespread wickedness. Consequently, all flesh was destroyed by a universal flood save those who went into the ark. While this would certainly constitute judgment of the wicked I would also suggest that, by unleashing a flood upon the world, God halted the accelerated progression of wickedness, thus preserving His Creation. In other words, if He had not intervened it is possible that the corruption would have continued to the point that the earth would have no longer been redeemable. Obviously, it didn’t take long for wickedness to rear its ugly head again but, as Paul said, “The creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope” (Romans 8:20).
God obviously disapproves of sin and corruption but, as Scripture reveals, He allows us to make our choices and then pay the consequences of disobedience. He allows the world to feel the sting of those consequences, unfortunately prompting some to doubt His sovereignty and existence. Even so, as His people, we should never doubt that His purpose will prevail in the end. If He must shorten the days in order to preserve His people, He will do so because His purposes will prevail. There is, in fact, coming a day when all the world will realize that He was always in control; all will acknowledge that He is forever sovereign and that His Throne has, is and will be established. In that day, they shall know that “I am the LORD.” Therefore, don’t be discouraged by circumstances and the whims of men; our God controls the destiny of His faithful servants.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
