In His hand are the deep places of the earth; the heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land. (Psalm 95:4-5)
God is the King of the Universe — every part of it — from the lowest point to the highest. Nothing in His Creation is foreign to Him; whether the deep places of the earth or the heights of the hills, He understands all because He spoke it all into existence. He is the One who created the waters of the sea and then gathered them together so that He might form dry land. Therefore, He is Master of the heights, the depths and everything in between. Juxtapose this with mankind’s understanding and capabilities: when we consider the size and complexity of the Universe, as smart as we may think we are, there is very little we understand.
Even with today’s technology, there are places on earth that we cannot reach, and if we can, it is with great difficulty. The tops of the mountains, for instance, are often beyond our reach. Certain peaks present incredible dangers and can only be attained with incredible effort and assistance. In that sense, they represent ultimate power and knowledge — something that will always be beyond our reach. Yet God, who created the high hills, holds all power and wisdom in His hands. Likewise, the vast extremities of space remain a mystery to us, taunting and defying our logic and ability to investigate. Not so with God: as it is written, “He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name” (Psalm 147:4).
Now consider this: God descends from Heaven and scales the top of the mountains — the same mountains that are beyond our reach. And if the mountains represent the heights of power and authority, that means God has the power to elevate men to great heights or bring kingdoms down to nothing. Just as He can easily examine the depths of the sea, God also discerns the human heart and knows our deepest thoughts — there is nothing we can hide from Him. Who are we, then, to ignore His majesty and authority and foolishly esteem ourselves as masters of our own life? His Creation — earth, sky and sea — responds to His Voice in obedience; the heavens declare His glory. Should not we, who were created in His image and born to serve Him, do the same?
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
