Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face evermore! (Psalm 105:4)

Let’s begin our thoughts with this — the search for God never ends. We will spend our entire life trying to contemplate and understand the One who has no beginning and no end, no limits to His power and wisdom. That said, how can we possibly expect to grasp everything He is seeing that we are mortal, limited by time, ability and mental acuity? Nevertheless, He tells us, “You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).

Let’s focus on that point for a moment — why does He say, “with all your heart”? Perhaps we are compelled to diligently search for Him so that He may see who truly desires to pursue Him and who does not? In other words, will those who are half-hearted in their search for God find Him? Will He reveal Himself completely to those who are not sold out to the goal of finding Him? Does He reward the lazy and indifferent seeker with the revelation and fulness of His Glory and Presence? If it is that we find when we seek, should it not also be that if we don’t seek, we will not find?

According to Jewish commentary, seeking God on a daily basis is likened to bringing Him a daily sacrifice — i.e. it is an act of worship. In that vein of thought, let’s consider this notion: because of the revelation we receive along the way, the process of searching for God is a goal in and of itself. That is to say, our understanding of God is the result of cumulative knowledge obtained day by day that will come to fruition when we are granted the privilege of seeing Him face to face. Therefore, our search for God must be daily regardless of the circumstances in which we find ourselves. Life may try to impede and undermine that search but, if we are to see Him face to face, we must overcome whatever we encounter, allowing nothing to stand in the way as we pursue the Presence of our Lord.
