Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, have fellowship with You? (Psalm 94:20)

There is a precept that is repeated throughout the Scripture: that which is holy cannot coexist with that which is profane; good cannot mingle with evil. Every time this precept has been ignored by men, confusion and destruction has followed. In his letter to the congregation at Corinth, Paul addressed this issue saying, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Messiah with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?” (2 Corinthians 6:14-15).

In that light, the psalmist poses the rhetorical question: will God have fellowship with rulers who oppose His sovereignty and will? Obviously, the answer is an emphatic, NO! The God of Israel is righteous and just; the rulers of this world — men like the Pharaohs, Nebuchadnezzar and Sennacherib — governed through tyranny and ruthlessness. Their evils have not been isolated acts but, through the ages, have been codified; i.e. they established their laws as legal statutes — lawless laws. So then, can thrones that epitomize evil share a common space with God whose Throne is founded upon righteousness and justice? Certainly not.

This being so, we should ask ourselves whether His House should welcome the influence and mindset of kings and rulers such as we describe here? In other words, should our houses of worship be governed by the whims of men and the culture that surrounds us? It is written, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations” (Isaiah 56:7) and so, we should be careful not to allow it to become a “den of thieves” (Jeremiah 7:11). We must resist the inclination to bow to the demands of culture just to be relevant in their eyes. The Almighty will not have fellowship with those who devise evil laws; as His people, we must uphold His standards in His House, and by extension, in our house. Does He truly rule in our homes — or is He compelled to share space with that which opposes Him?
