Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. (Psalm 90:1-2)
This song begins the fourth book of the psalms and is the first of several attributed to Moses. It seems fitting, then, that the opening verses acknowledge that the Almighty is a dwelling place for His people. I say that because it was under Moses’ leadership that the people of God built a Sanctuary whereby the Lord could dwell among them which allowed them to commune with Him. And notice that this scenario was not for Moses’ generation only but the man of God reveals this was the Lord’s intention for all generations, even before He formed mountains and everything else in this physical world.
In other words, the true purpose behind the creation of the world was for the Everlasting God to have a people He could bestow His love upon and who, in return, would love Him. In short, the purpose of creation centers on relationship. God wanted to have relationship with us and desired that we would want a relationship with Him. As an extension of His purpose for the world, He willed that we would develop meaningful relationships with one another that promoted life, not just existence. As it relates to God’s people and our role in the earth, it was never about religion, route and ritual; it’s always been about God’s desire to have a loving family who would look to Him for all their needs and who would care for one another.
This being so, it should come as no surprise that Messiah taught that the two most important commands are: “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ … And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:30-31). These are the two most important commands because they encapsulate the character of our God — i.e. He is alone is God and He is love. Consequently, this world is an expression of His character and functions as it should when we acknowledge His Will and purpose.
Obviously, many in this world refuse to obey His purpose and that has resulted in the prevalence of hatred and contention. Nevertheless, it is our duty to continue upholding His righteous standards and demonstrate, through love and relationship, His desire that many more would come into His House and be part of His family. From everlasting to everlasting, He is God and this has always been His purpose.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
