Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. (Psalm 48:2)

Several years ago while on a trip to Israel, a dear friend of mine said of the land, “There is something in the dirt.” His point was there was something special about being in the land because there is something special about the land itself. The Psalmist concurs and adds to that observation, there is even something special about the air one breathes when in the land, especially in Jerusalem. Commentators expound upon this idea, suggesting that Jerusalem is to the world what the trunk of a fruitful tree is to the branches and twigs it supports. In other words, all things good emanate from Jerusalem and flow out to the nations.

I believe this to be true, at least on the spiritual side of things, because I am firmly of the opinion that Jerusalem was once the site of the Garden of Eden. Therefore, just as the one river that flowed through the garden eventually divided into four river heads that flowed out to the nations, God’s purpose for Jerusalem is to be the fountainhead of blessing that  positively impacts all other nations. For example, consider that the Gospel of the Kingdom started in Jerusalem and, from there, flowed out to Judea, Samaria and the rest of the world.

Currently, Jerusalem is described in a spiritual sense as being Sodom and Egypt (Revelation 11:8), which is to say she is in desperate need of her King. There are a myriad of reasons for the current status, the greatest being that she cannot truly serve her purpose in the earth until King Messiah rules and reigns from His Throne in Jerusalem. In that day, Jerusalem truly will be the joy of the whole earth, the city of the Great King. And once again, the earth shall see that every good thing will flow from Zion to the rest of the world and then the rest of the world will flow to Zion. As it written:

“It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.rom Zion.” (Isaiah 2:2-3)
