Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies; the peoples fall under You. (Psalm 45:5)
Earlier in this psalm, the composer spoke of the King’s sword upon His thigh; now the psalmist, continuing with the military analogy, refers to the King’s arrows which have been sharpened in order to pierce the heart of His foes. But if His sword spoke metaphorically of His Word, what do His arrows represent? Let’s consider this passage: “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. They shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate” (Psalm 127:4-5).
It is our mission as parents to teach our children the ways of the Lord so that they will grow into men and women of God who, in turn, are to teach their children. Thus in this manner, truth and righteousness are propagated for the benefit of ensuing generations. In other words, it is our duty to make disciples of them — to make certain they are established in the Word of God so that they are able to make disciples of others. And so it is that the Word of God, like arrows, is sent forth to penetrate the hearts of those who have not heard the Good News. Further, as sharp arrows, the words of those who speak His truth are to be delivered boldly (not harshly), confidently and clearly, thus fulfilling the phrase, “They shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate.”
As the Gospel of the Kingdom goes forth, the Kingdom of Heaven advances, taking territory away from the realm of darkness. More importantly, those who have been in bondage to sin and held captive by the evil inclination are set free. And so it is that, as the King’s arrows find their mark, the people’s fall under Him — some fall in acts of submission and humility; some fall because they are unable to withstand His might and power. May we all be arrows in His hand, able and equipped to do His work, and as we go forth, remember He said, “the gates of Hades shall not prevail” against us (Matthew 16:18).
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
