Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in His holy mountain. (Psalm 48:1)

It is amazing to me that those who came so close to being taken alive into hell — the sons of Korah — were able to see into the future and catch a glimpse of the glory that was to come. This is clearly exhibited in the numerous psalms they composed that celebrated the day when the Lord will reign over the earth from Zion. So think about that: those brought up in a rebellious environment and who may have, at one time, harbored that same rebellious spirit turned back to God and produced songs of praise lauding the King of Kings. Not only that but, centuries later, we regard these psalms as sacred because they were inspired by the Holy Spirit.

It is believed this particular psalm was written before Israel entered the land of Canaan, which means it was written long before Jerusalem was Israel’s capital and before there was a Temple in Jerusalem. Yet those who had once teetered on the edge of annihilation came to speak of the most glorious time that there ever will be in human history — when King Messiah rules from His holy mountain fulfilling the prophecy that says, “Yet I have set My King on My holy hill of Zion” (Psalm 2:6). Others have and others will follow this pattern, meaning many who have resisted the will and purpose of God will come to honor His sovereignty and acknowledge Him as King.

It is written that, “All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before You” (Psalm 22:27). No doubt, countless millions who worship Him “in the city of our God” will be from among those who had once resisted and opposed Him. Like the sons of Korah, those who once teetered on the edge of destruction but who turned to the Lord will come up to His holy mountain to honor Him. And so the point of this is to accentuate the fact that, not just many, but all of us at one time were as the sons of Korah — running headlong toward our demise. Thankfully, by God’s grace and the blood of the Lamb we can now look toward the day when we will be received by the Most High as His sons and daughters. In that day, we will acknowledge Him as Great and that He is greatly to be praised.

Blessings and Shalom,
