On the harp I will praise You, O God, my God. Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God. (Psalm 43:4-5)

Whether the author is David or the sons of Korah, the psalms consistently remind us that people then were just like people now — subject to feeling defeated and discouraged. Yet the composer would also remind us that, in any and every situation, there is always hope in God. But take notice that the God we serve is not some distant inaccessible deity who may or may not respond to our pleas — no, He is our God; He is my God.

The God we serve rules the Universe, not just part of it. At His Word all that is came into being and continues by His will. The heaven of heavens cannot contain Him for He is everywhere at all times. He calls all of the countless stars by their name; with a blast from His nostrils He split a sea and liberated a nation at once. His Presence, enveloped in a thick dark cloud, thundered from a mountain and gave them instructions in how to live. His majesty and power extends over all of Creation and, yet, He has the time and the will to work in my life — even in the smallest details.

It is quite easy for me to believe that He did all the things mentioned above and much more in fact. I have no issue believing that He can do these magnificent things again. Sometimes. however, I can get tripped up thinking He is interested in the less dramatic details of my life because, well, He is the God of the Universe. So I am thankful to the psalmist of being reminded that, while He is God, He is also my God — it’s personal. He does care about my life and yours, including the intricacies of our day to day life. If He knows the number of hairs on my head (a count that changes daily), certainly He knows what I am going through. More importantly, He will make certain to bring me through it which is why — “I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.”

Blessings and Shalom,
