Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. (Psalm 37:1-3)

In Judaism it is believed that this psalm, though written by David, was actually given to David by the Spirit of God in response to his prayers in the previous psalm. Thus we are to understand that, as the psalm begins, the Lord is speaking to David and all who will listen. His message is, in consideration of those who do evil and seemingly prosper in it, we are not to be seduced into thinking theirs is the path to success. As we consider this, take note of the fact that they are called “evildoers” and “workers of iniquity.” In my view, it is one thing to be regarded as someone who commits wicked acts, but it is another thing entirely to be regarded as evil and as someone who works at being wicked.

Obviously, there are many people in this world who willingly indulge in carnal acts and do wicked things; then there are those who are not satisfied with just doing wicked things themselves, but who seek to influence others to do wickedly as well. It reminds me of what the Messiah said to certain scribes and Pharisees: “You travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves” (Matthew 23:15). Let’s put it this way, evil doers often measure success in how many others they can influence to join them in their wickedness. Perhaps this aspect of their supposed prosperity should be considered when contemplating the message given to us.

We shouldn’t allow anyone’s worldly riches to be an enticement to do as they do, especially if they practice unrighteousness. Just as importantly, we should not compete with nor try to emulate the ways of evildoers and those God calls “workers of iniquity” — i.e. those who provoke others to join them in their rebellion. For a season, it may appear as if they have the upper hand and are amassing an army of wicked men but, as the Lord reminds David, their success will be short-lived. They may spring up and spread quickly, but they are destined to be cut down.

So then, let us continue to walk in the ways of the Lord regardless of what everyone else is doing; regardless of how many people they win to their side, remember who is on your side. Trust in the Lord and do good and you will dwell in the land long after the evildoers have faded.

Blessings and Shalom,
