Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. (Psalm 37:4-6)
What we focus upon most likely will determine how our day will go. I say that because we typically gravitate toward whatever — or whoever — we are focused upon. Think about this: on those occasions when you have to pass a tractor trailer on a two lane highway, have you noticed that if you keep shifting your eye toward the truck, he seems to be moving toward you? In reality, it isn’t the truck that is coming into your lane; you are the one drifting toward the truck. How so? Instead of focusing on the road in front of you, you decided to focus on the truck and, consequently, began moving toward it.
If the cares and troubles of this life are our primary focus during the day, it is likely that by the end of the day we will be frazzled, discouraged and worn out. However, if we determine to take delight in the Lord — if He is our focus — we will not be overwhelmed by the storms that swirl around us. Furthermore, rather than being envious of the material success of the wicked, He is motivated to grant us the desires of our heart. When He is our delight, we are invited to shift our burdens (literally roll them) from ourselves onto Him. Jewish commentators further suggest that David meant to infer that we must be ready to clear (roll away) all the obstacles and impediments from the path that leads to what God has for us.
In other words, we can trust Him to bring to pass that which we desire in light of His will for our life. And because we choose to focus upon Him, there is the promise that, despite the schemes and plots of those who contend with us, God will bring our righteousness into light. Were we required to stand in court we would have nothing to fear because He will see to it that our faithfulness to Him shines for all to see. That is going to prove to be a very important matter in these last days. As times grow more dangerous, God’s people will be accused, assailed and despised, therefore, our faithfulness must shine bright in contrast to the darkness of the wickedness of this world. And so as storms and trials gather around us, let us continue focusing upon and moving toward Yeshua, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
