Those who wait on the Lord shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; indeed, you will look carefully for his place, but it shall be no more. But the meek shall inherit the earth and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. (Psalm 37:9-11)

When Rebekah realized she was pregnant, she also perceived that something strange was occurring in her womb. When she inquired of the Lord, she was told that two different nations and two different types of people were contending with one another even though unborn. It was prophesied that these two people would never quite get along; whichever one grew strong would lord over the other. If the weaker all of a sudden grew stronger, the other would become weaker. However, it was further prophesied that, in the end, the younger, Jacob, would prevail over the older, the one we know as Esau.

The point is this: for most of history, God’s people have suffered under the heel of “Esau” and by that I mean carnal, impulsive men who have no regard for things sacred. Yet as David said, those who place their hope in the Lord, remain steadfast and wait on His timing will inherit the land and live under His blessing. Even though the wicked of this world seem to hold all the power, we are promised that their time is short and those who have been downtrodden and humbled by wicked men will be elevated to positions of authority and influence. Knowing that should not cause us to boast because, as David said and as the Messiah said, the meek shall inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5).

The stark reality of the issue is this: when God created the earth, He created it to be inhabited with people; but not just any people, it was to be inhabited with His people, the sons and daughters of God. Underscoring this is Messiah’s teaching in the Parable of the Wheat and Tares. The Almighty sowed good seed which are the sons of the kingdom; it was His enemy who produced sons of the wicked one. And like the tares that are gathered, bundled and burned, everything and everyone that offends will be removed — their place shall be no more. In the end, only the righteous will be left to inherit the earth.

Perhaps that sounds harsh and caustic to some but that is the Word of the Lord. And it will be in that day, that the righteous will once and for all enter into His rest and find true peace. And though we look to the future Kingdom as the realization of this promise, may it be that God grants us all a taste of that abundant peace in this season.

Blessings and Shalom,
