When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.” Do not hide Your face from me; do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help. (Psalm 27:8-9)

We live in a day when communication has become extremely convenient, and at the same time, incredibly impersonal. We can email, text and correspond in so many different ways that face to face conversations are no longer necessary in most cases. On one hand the ease with which we can correspond with others might increase our productivity, but on the other hand — at least it seems this way to me — these modes of communication have actually exposed our laziness. Not only that but I believe modern communication methods have made us apathetic and insensitive to each other. If you are like me, you realize that certain things pertinent to a meaningful conversation cannot be conveyed in a text no matter how many emojis they come up with. There are certain scenarios where I want to see the person’s expression and hear the tone of their voice in order to gauge just how the conversation is really going — even more importantly, to better assess the nature and depth of our relationship.

Let’s now apply this notion to our pursuit of God: there have been times in my life when I wished I could see the expression on God’s face so that I might truly know how He felt about me at that moment. Most often this desire arose when I felt, and even knew, that I had disappointed Him. As I poured my heart out, I longed to see if His countenance expressed anger, frustration or compassion. Like David, I prayed, “Do not hide Your face from me; do not turn Your servant away in anger.” In those times, I feel like I actually appreciated what it meant to seek the face of God.

How can we truly know Him if we don’t seek Him? If we take a casual, “just when it’s convenient for me” approach to our relationship with the Father, is that not the equivalence of our modern way of approaching others? David said, “Your face, Lord, I will seek” meaning that he was determined to pursue God with all his heart. Realizing that no one sees God face to face, still, the point is that if we are to genuinely know the heart of God, we have to be willing to put in the effort to spend time with Him in prayer, meditation and studying His Word. As we do, we will find that He responds in a very personal way.

Blessings and Shalom,
