The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell. (Psalm 27:1-3)
When we are in distress and bending under the weight of despair, it like darkness to our soul. If and when we find ourselves in that situation, David reminds us that the LORD is the light that leads us out of our predicament. As it is written in another familiar psalm — “Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). Step by step He guides us in the path that we should go as we make our way through the darkness and into the light of His deliverance. If the darkness is the night, then He is our light whereby we are encouraged to endure; by preserving us and bringing us in the brightness of day, He is our salvation.
Whether day or night, we should fear no one except the LORD. He is for us and not against us and so, if our adversaries attack us in the night when we are unprepared and cannot see, He is the light that exposes our enemies. If they come at us during the day with overwhelming numbers, we can be confident that they will stumble and fall because He is our salvation. Moreover, when we are walking upright before Him, He causes those who would oppose us to fear us, as it is written: “I will send My fear before you, I will cause confusion among all the people to whom you come, and will make all your enemies turn their backs to you” (Exodus 23:27).
The enemies of God have their agenda and they work diligently to bring it to pass, and since they cannot touch the Almighty, they attempt to take their aggression out on His people. And while they have, at times, achieved limited success, in the end, their agenda will fail — they and their schemes will come to nothing. Even though his topic was a bit different, nevertheless, Paul summed up our theme for today when he penned these words: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). Who indeed?
Blessings and Shalom,
