When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.” Do not hide Your face from me; do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help. (Psalm 27:8-9)
As expressed in this and many other prayers, David was a person focused upon pursuing an intimate relationship with the Almighty. As lofty as his aspirations were in that regard, in the verse above, it is revealed that he did not think it right to take credit for it; he explained that it was God who placed it in his heart to enthusiastically seek the LORD. In turn, David’s heart acted more or less as God’s emissary to provoke David to seek the LORD’s face with all his heart. Like a seed planted in fertile ground, the God-given incentive grew until it became an obsession of sorts. More than anything else, David desired intimacy with the Creator in answer to the Creator’s desire for intimacy with him.
Desire is a strong emotion and can lead us headlong into destruction if our hearts are not infused with purity and holiness. And so it is important that we allow the LORD to plant the seed of His Word in our hearts, along with the desire to do what is pleasing to Him that we might seek Him with all our being. It was also David who said, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). The obvious take away from this statement is that God will grant our desires when our desires are focused upon Him; in fact, that is what His heart longs for and, so, why wouldn’t He grant this desire?
The point today is to consider just what do our hearts desire? Are our inclinations pure and with the goal of drawing closer to our Maker? Do we truly want to seek His face? In seeking to find that answer, it is advisable that we don’t listen exclusively to our mind; we need to search our heart. Should we discover that our heart doesn’t agree with our head — and by that I mean, our heart is inclined toward others or other things — let us pray that God will do a work on our heart and implant a greater desire for Him. David was convinced that God had done so with him; may He place within all of us a greater desire to seek Him while He may be found.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
