Good Morning.

This is the sum of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years. Then Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah. (Genesis 25:7-9)

As the role Abraham served in God’s purposes drew to a close, many details about his final years were not addressed. We surmise that Scripture doesn’t address many of these details because the Bible isn’t just a history book but a record of God’s purpose for His people. God had Moses record those things that we need to know as it relates to his purpose for those who lived before us and how it applies to us today.

Through Abraham God brought forth a people of faith who become known as Israel. Additionally, God used the life of Abraham to teach ensuing generations, including this one, about what God expects from those who serve Him. Second only to the Messiah, Abraham’s life serves as a model for the believer. We are his “spiritual” descendants because we are the seed of Abraham (Gal. 3:29). As such we are to do the “works of Abraham.” Now, if we learn these things through his life, what are we to learn from his death?

The Bible says that, “To everything there is a season; a time for every purpose under heaven; a time to be born and a time to die.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2). There is a reason for every season and each season is impregnated with purpose. Furthermore, if everything has a purpose then I would argue that every one has a purpose. Abraham served his and when his duty had been performed, his life came to a close. If we are to do the works of Abraham, then we must realize that we are here to serve God’s purpose — that is our life’s goal. Let us live, today, in the way that serves our Master’s purpose so that when our season here on earth is coming to an end, we can be confident that the reason for our season has been fulfilled.

Blessings and Shalom,
