Good Morning.

Then God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. (Genesis 8:1)

Have you ever wondered if it was possible for God to forget the only family that was then existent upon the earth? Of course He didn’t. So what does the Bible mean when it says, “God remembered”? The Hebrew root word זכר zachar is also translated in noun form as “a memorial.” Thus the idea being put forth is this: when God “remembers” someone, He begins to act. In other words, in our text, the time had come for God to begin to act on behalf of Noah and his family, thus brining an end to their ordeal.

The evidence of this fact is that, immediately following the statement, “God remembered,” the Scripture says that God caused a wind to begin blowing over the earth. This was the beginning of the end of their confinement in the ark.

Where you and I are concerned, we should take note of the fact that those who walk in obedience to the Creator are causing things to occur in the heavens. Our prayers and acts of obedience accumulate, as it were, until such a time that these things come up before the Almighty as a memorial. When that occurs, God begins to act on our behalf. Consider the Roman centurion, Cornelius, who is described as being devout, generous and prayerful. One day as he fasted and prayed, he received a message from an angel who said:

“Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.” (Acts 10:4)

As a result of God moving on his behalf, his household were the first Gentiles to hear the Gospel and be filled with the Spirit of God. You could say that it was at this point that God caused a wind (in Hebrew, רוח ruach) to pass over the earth. So then, “Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9).
