You who love the Lord, hate evil! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 97:10)
If you’ve ever gardened, you know that one of the chores which accompanies the process is weeding. In my experience, I would say that weeding constitutes as much time as anything else, if not more. After days and weeks of pulling the same kind of weed from the same spot, one might be tempted to think it’s a lost cause — better to just surrender to the inevitable and let the weeds do what they are going to do. Unfortunately, that way of thinking allows for the weeds to eventually take over the garden — I’ve seen it happen. And so the point is, if one wishes for the garden to flourish, they can’t allow the weeds to remain.
This same concept applies to evil in this world; it’s always present and continually looking for ways to invade our life — our garden if you will. There are times when it seems hopeless to resist it because, just as soon as we overcome one intrusion, there is another one popping up somewhere else. It’s akin to an endless game of whack-a-mole which would, obviously, become tiresome. Perhaps that is why some give in to what seems inevitable to them and resolve to co-exist with evil — maybe because they’re intimidated, maybe because they’ve grown to like it.
But the day is coming when God will demonstrate His power over all enemies and that He is exalted far above all gods (Psalm 97:7). With His strong right arm, He will remove all evil from His garden so that His people, the righteous, may thrive. In that day, when He topples the worthless gods of evildoers and all see that they are helpless before Him, we who love the Lord will despise evil as He does. No longer will there be fear of reprisal or a sense of hopelessness but we shall be delivered from their hand. Not only that, but empowered by His Spirit, the righteous will go forth and “trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet” (Malachi 4:3).
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
