Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth. (Psalm 96:9)
In the previous devotion, we highlighted the idea that the “beauty of holiness” hints at the garments worn by the priests of Israel and how their beautiful garments established a pattern of conduct for us. In short, we are to present ourselves before the Most High in a manner that is pleasing to Him. To be clear, it’s not just about outward appearances, clothing or rituals, but about a deep, inner conviction that provokes us to live a life pleasing to God. And yet, while worshiping the Lord in the “beauty of holiness” speaks of a purity of heart, what is in our heart should be expressed outwardly in our conduct. As His servants, we should exhibit attitudes and actions that others can observe, and at the same time, it should be obvious that our actions are motivated by sincerity and devotion to our Creator.
To live this way pleases God because it is a reflection of His character and His attributes, namely His holiness. As it is written, “You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:45). If we reflect His glory and holiness, how can that not be beautiful — at least in His eyes? I would suggest that, in so doing, we present something that is attractive, even desirable, to those we come in contact with. The beauty of holiness is not just poetic language or an abstract concept; it is, most literally, a beautiful way of living, defined by love, humility and an authentic desire to please God.
It is our duty to be a light to those in darkness. Pairing that idea with the beauty of holiness, I would recommend that the light we present is to be attractive — something that calls to those in darkness and draws them to the Father of lights. Our light should not be repulsive; it should not blind others and chase them away. The light we present to the world should be a genuine and sincere reflection of the Messiah who said, “I will draw all peoples to Myself” (John 12:32). Therefore, let us strive to serve and worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness that others may see His light and come to know what it means to live an abundant life.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
