Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. (Psalm 95:6-7)
As followers of Messiah, we are regarded as the children of God — a station that most of us find comforting. Indeed Paul said that, “the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God … and joint heirs with Messiah” whereby we are permitted to call Him, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15-17). That God considers us to be His sons and daughters is the greatest of privileges and one that should be enthusiastically embraced. I would imagine that most do. At the same time, we must remember that our loving, Heavenly Father is also our King — and we are His servants.
Most of us think nothing of approaching our earthly fathers casually and without any pomp and circumstance; we’d look pretty ridiculous if we did. But I think that, because we can engage our earthly father in this manner, we tend to do the same with our Heavenly Father. In other words, because He is our Father, we are inclined to approach Him in the same care-free and casual way which unfortunately ignores the fact that He is the King of the Universe. Consider: angels surround His throne and cry, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty,” day and night.
In that light, the psalmist reminds us that we are to revere the Lord and worship Him in humility. In acknowledgement of His majesty, we should willingly kneel before Him as one would before any powerful monarch. As faithful sons and daughters, we should bow before the One who made us and breathed the breath of life into us and appointed us as His children. Yes, He is a good, good Father but He is also the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Let us never lose sight of this but always give Him the honor and reverence He is due.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
