I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David: “Your seed I will establish forever, and build up your throne to all generations.” Selah. (Psalm 89:3-4)

I have always found this concept — that David’s throne would be perpetual through the generations — to be of great interest. Mainly because, with the destruction of the 1st Temple and the Babylonian captivity, no descendant of David has sat upon the throne in almost 2,700 years. The last monarch of Judah, Zedekiah, saw his sons executed before his eyes, was intentionally blinded, and then taken in chains to Babylon. Yet, we know that anything God declares to be so will not be undone; he promised David that He would establish the throne of his kingdom forever (2 Samuel 7:13). So how do we reconcile the current state of affairs with the promise given?

In my view, there is only one resolution; God speaks from the perspective of seeing things through the lens of eternity. His purposes are not derailed by the antics of men, and even when it seems to be so, His prophetic plan continues to take shape. For the record, David was always a forerunner of someone greater who was to come — someone who would govern God’s people with justice and righteousness. That greater was identified as the “Son of David.” In other words, it has long been understood that this prophecy concerning the throne of David was always pointing us toward the Messiah.

Of the Messiah, Scripture says that “to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed” (Daniel 7:14). When the young Mary was visited by the angel, he told her that her yet-to-be-born son would be given “the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:32-33).  The point is, God doesn’t lie and He doesn’t make mistakes; it was always that the Messiah was the One destined to rule over God’s people, and for all generations.

I understand that, presently, Yeshua is not seated upon David’s Throne in Jerusalem but He is seated upon the Heavenly Throne. Furthermore, He reigns in the hearts of all who love God and desire to serve Him. That being said, we are fast approaching a day when He will rule and reign from Jerusalem, and in that day, the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdoms of our God and of His Messiah, the Son of David. May it be soon!

Blessings and Shalom,
