Blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen. The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended. (Psalm 72:19-20)

If you recall, we addressed the fact that this psalm is believed to have been composed by David as he lay on his deathbed and in anticipation of Solomon’s ascent to the throne. Therefore, it commemorates the last significant event in his long and storied life — one that has been recounted for millennia. There are so many events in David’s journey that we all look to for inspiration, instruction, and yes warning, because in many ways, this man was like us. Not that we all started out composing songs or slaying giants but that, like David, we have been wronged by others and have, unfortunately, wronged others.

Whatever the occasion, whether the victim or the offender, David realized that God alone was his strength and his Savior. From our vantage point it appears that he was always able to break through the emotional barrier that enveloped him at the time and offer blessing and praise unto the Lord. So, with his last bit of strength, he composed a prayer for his posterity and a song of thanksgiving to the One who had guided him through all the ups and downs of life. There was no better way to conclude his life than to say, “Blessed be His glorious name forever!”

Writing this, I cannot help but contemplate my own ups and downs and the emotions attached to all the good and the bad. This prompts me to pause and consider my reaction in those times and wonder whether or not I was careful to thank God for His goodness even when I was being wronged? Was I quick to consider His faithfulness and mercy when I wronged others? Perhaps this sentiment resonates with you. The point is to recognize that it should be in our hearts to be as David and bless the Lord in all times. Moreover, may it be when our time comes and the end of this existence is near that we will be moved to bless the Lord with a grateful and willing heart. And when our prayers are ended may it be with the declaration, “Blessed be His glorious name forever!”

Blessings and Shalom,
