The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies. Their poison is like the poison of a serpent; they are like the deaf cobra that stops its ear, which will not heed the voice of charmers, charming ever so skillfully. (Psalm 58:3-5)

As it is written, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Unfortunately, many have chosen to use their tongue to render the former, and in so doing, have chosen to micmic the tactics of the Adversary. It was serpent’s cunning words that seduced Eve and led her to believe a lie. I would add that the lie used by the serpent then, and also every lie he has used since then, is always mingled with a strain of truth. In other words, a convincing lie will always contain enough truth to make the lie seem plausible. Therein lies the danger to those who are being fed the lie, but what does this say about those who spew the lie?

David said they are like a viper that closes its ear to the voice of charmers. In other words, they don’t want to hear anything that would mitigate their natural compulsion to harm others, and so they stop up their ears. They willingly become deaf to those who speak the truth; they resist any effort to convince them to stop believing lies and do what is righteous. They are, as David said, people who go astray almost immediately speaking lies, often when it would be easier to tell the truth. The problem for them is, this doesn’t end well.

In the last days, lies and deception will be one of the primary tactics of the enemy to lead the people of God astray, and so, we must be diligent to pursue the truth. As for the world, Scripture tells us that many will prefer a lie over the truth. In fact, Paul said that people would take so much pleasure in unrighteousness, that they would have no regard for the truth. As a result, “God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned” (2 Thessalonians 2:11-12).

That is sad and tragic to consider but, as time moves on, it becomes clear that this is the way of the world in our day. Nevertheless, as God’s people, this presents us with the opportunity to be a light in the midst of all this darkness; to be a beacon of truth in a sea of falsehood and deceit. And so, let us stop up our ears to the lies of the Adversary, and let us use our tongue to speak truth and life to this generation.

Blessings and Shalom,
