He shall send from heaven and save me; He reproaches the one who would swallow me up. Selah God shall send forth His mercy and His truth. (Psalm 57:3)

Remember — this psalm was written as a result of the unexpected encounter David had with Saul in the cave. Until that moment, David had been ruthlessly pursued by the king and 3,000 others which, no doubt, must have troubled David greatly. Yet in the midst of this situation, David remained convinced that Saul’s superior numbers were no reason to fear; if need be, God would send help from heaven to deliver him. David was confident that, in the end, God’s mercy towards him would be on display for all to see — he was not disappointed. When he awakened from his nap, Saul realized he had been spared and was compelled to say to David in front everyone, “You are more righteous than I; for you have rewarded me with good, whereas I have rewarded you with evil” (1 Samuel 24:17).

This reminds me of another situation when the man of God was surrounded by adversaries far more numerous than those who were with him — or so it seemed. In 2 Kings it is recorded that the king of Syria besieged the city of Dothan in an effort to find and capture the prophet Elisha. When the prophet’s servant discovered they were surrounded by a vast army, he exclaimed to Elisha, “My master! What shall we do?” The prophet responded, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them” (2 Kings 6:15-16). The Lord opened the servant’s eyes enabling him to see beyond the temporal world and behold an angelic army that far outnumbered those assembled against the man of God. The Syrians were subsequently struck with blindness and went away without Elisha.

There are times when disaster seems to be imminent, and then out of nowhere, deliverance comes. It probably won’t include seeing a host of angels in fiery chariots, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. As it is written, “He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up” (Psalm 91:11-12). The point is that the Lord will help us in such a way that, not only will we be delivered, but He will bring reproach upon our enemies. In so doing, His mercy toward us will be evident and His Truth will be vindicated in the sight of all who oppose Him. In the end, He will be glorified.

Blessings and Shalom,
