Good Morning.
And thus you shall eat it: with a belt on your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. So you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord’s Passover. (Exodus 12:11)
The particular instructions given here –- to observe this ceremony with staff in hand, etc. -– seem to apply only to this particular Passover. The implications are obvious though — be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. This, after many of months of anticipation tempered with disappointment at Pharaoh’s refusal to let them go. Finally, one day, the long wait came to an end when Moses told them to prepare to leave.
There was no ambiguity about this command; it was definite and here is why I feel it is important to mention this. Many believers have long heard — some of us for most of our lives — of how one day we would be redeemed at the LORD’s return. Along with that promise came the understanding that those days would be rife with wickedness and troubles. As a child I remember vividly the sense that those days were far away and, because of their distance in time, hard to imagine. That is no longer the case; things are becoming clearer each day and what seemed so far away then seems ever so close now.
The point then is that, as it was for Israel of old, the wait for us will one day cease. The word will come to prepare to leave at a moment’s notice. So then, let us prepare our hearts today for the call that is certain to come. Let us not be as the foolish virgins who didn’t prepare and were unable to enter the wedding when the door was still open. Keep your lamps burning and live in anticipation of His return.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
