Good Morning.

So Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him. Then he said: “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants he shall be to his brethren.” And he said: “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant. May God enlarge Japheth, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem; and may Canaan be his servant.” (Genesis 9:24-27)

In these verses, two things stand out: first, Noah acknowledges Shem as the chief among the three brothers and, secondly, he doesn’t mention Ham at all. As I pointed out yesterday, there is a lot of intrigue regarding what Canaan may or may not have done. But I find it equally intriguing that when Noah blessed Shem and Japheth and cursed Canaan, he didn’t bother to mention Ham at all. Keep in mind, the Bible says that Ham is the one who looked upon his father’s nakedness so why wasn’t Ham cursed or, at the very least, rebuked?

It could be that Noah refused to curse Ham because his son had already been blessed by God. Earlier in this chapter, the text says that God “blessed Noah and his sons” (Gen. 9:1). If this is accurate then we can conclude that no one has the authority to curse what God has blessed. Many years later, Balaam attempted to curse Israel on three different occasions but was forced to bless them instead saying, “Behold, I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it” (Num. 23:20).

Now consider this: if the Adversary could have destroyed Adam and Eve in the garden, don’t you think he would have done it outright rather than going through a long, drawn out process? So why didn’t he? The answer is that he couldn’t — he doesn’t have that kind of power and authority over God’s people. He can’t curse what God has blessed. Likewise, he doesn’t have that kind of power and authority over you — if God has blessed, he can’t reverse it. True, he will lay a snare for God’s people, hoping to entrap us but that works only when we allow ourselves to be led astray by our own lusts and desires.

So the point today is to rest assured that if you are in covenant with the Almighty and are walking in obedience to Him, you have the promise of His blessing. Though the enemy has the desire to curse you and men may try to curse you, they do not have the power to remove you from God’s blessing. We will most certainly experience difficulty and trials but nothing shall separate us from the love of God and the blessing He wishes to bestow upon His children.

Blessings and Shalom,
