Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and all its’ fullness; let the field be joyful, and all that is in it. (Psalm 96:11-12)

When Messiah returns and rules the nations with a rod of iron and with righteousness (Psalm 2:9), the entire universe will be glad. Perhaps it’s easy for us to envision how people will react; but with the same gladness mankind will express, the different components of God’s creation will respond as well. Every element of nature will carry out its function to the fullest as an expression of its joy that the Creation, as it was intended, has been restored. The heavens will give abundant rain and the earth will produce plentiful crops.

As mankind at large is delivered from the bondage of the kingdom of darkness, nature will be rejuvenated in response. As Paul said, “Creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Romans 8:21). In other words, when mankind begins to fulfill its destiny as determined by the Creator, then nature — which exists to support and sustain man and his purpose — will achieve its destiny as well. Paul acknowledges this fact as well, saying, “the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God” (Romans 8:19). In reality, the creation is waiting for us to come into the fulness of our purpose so that it might do likewise which is why, presently, it “groans and labors with birth pangs” (Romans 8:22).

Just as a person who is not living up to their full potential, or who feels they aren’t serving a noble purpose, may exhibit signs of disappointment and frustration, the Creation exhibits those signs as well. Earthquakes, tsunamis, drought, floods and all the ominous indicators we see occurring in nature speak to Creation’s desire to be liberated. One day, the Liberator will return and will release man and nature from the bondage of corruption thus initiating a 1000 year season of rejoicing and celebration. Think of it: just as we will shout and dance for joy, the fields, the trees and the seas will join with us in celebrating the return to Creation’s purpose. Personally, I can’t wait.

Blessings and Shalom,
