I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.” Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. (Psalm 91:2-3)
There is a tradition that says, as Moses ascended Mount Sinai to meet with the Lord, he uttered the words above — “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.” According to the tradition, as he climbed the mountain, violent and demonic forces attempted to block his path and prevent him from drawing closer to God. They set traps and pitfalls in attempt to ensnare the man of God, hence the declaration, “I will trust in God for He shall deliver me from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.”
Of course, there is nothing revealed in Scripture to validate this tradition, but I believe there is plenty of Scripture that validates the concept. Whenever a person or a congregation determines to follow the Lord and embarks upon a mission to advance His purposes, they effectively place a target on their chest. Anyone who has been in the faith for any length of time knows that when we endeavor to draw near to God, the kingdom of darkness works overtime to interfere, interrupt and, if possible, destroy us.
Whether or not Moses faced such opposition as he ascended Mount Sinai, we don’t know. However, the notion that we all face unsavory and sometimes demonic forces as we pursue God is a reality. In our journey to ascend the mountain, so to speak, there are pitfalls and traps meant to ensnare us and to prevent us from fulfilling God’s purpose for our life. Thankfully, we who are in Messiah have been given authority over these forces and, in His Name, can overcome all obstacles the Adversary has set before us. So in spite of the obstacles, let us go forward in the power of His might, knowing that the forces of darkness must give way to the will and purpose of God. Through Him we shall overcome.
