You turn man to destruction, and say, “Return, O children of men.” For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past, and like a watch in the night. (Psalm 90:3-4)
If we were to summarize the essence of this psalm it would be the contrast between God’s eternal power and authority and man’s frailty and finitude. These two opposites are acknowledged throughout the Scripture; God commonly reminds mankind that, for all our achievements, we are destined to return to the dust from which we came. For all our dreams and visions for the future, our impact upon the world in which we live is limited, in fact, next to nothing when compared to the One who views the past millennia as if it were yesterday.
Therefore it is ridiculous for us to think that doing what is right in our own eyes will stand the test of time; like all those men who were determined to build a tower that would reach into heaven, over time, our attempts to be as God crumble and fall. Even youthful zeal and strength will eventually decline into a state of weakness as old age approaches and we inch nearer the day when we must give an account of our actions. It is that fact that brings us to the point for today.
The One who created everything knows His creation better than we know ourselves, and therefore, He encourages us to return — return to Him and to the ways that lead to life. If we truly want to make an enduring impact upon this world, repentance is the first step. Turning to God with all our hearts puts us on a path that leads to abundant life and the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy to our children and grandchildren. Property, wealth and such other things can only last for a season, but a faith-filled life that bears the Lord’s blessing is something that can reach out and influence generations to come. So with the days we have left allotted to us, let’s make the most of them and build something that really counts.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
