His seed shall endure forever, and His throne as the sun before Me. It shall be established forever like the moon, even like the faithful witness in the sky. (Psalm 89:36-37)

As has been mentioned multiple times in this psalm, God ordained that the Throne of David would endure through the generations. It has also been mentioned that this promise is to be fulfilled, ultimately, by Messiah the Son of David. It is He who will sit upon David’s Throne judging in righteousness and truth. In that day, David’s Throne will shine as brightly as the sun and provide light for all the nations that they may serve God in truth and with understanding.

Obviously, that is yet to come because there is no king sitting upon a throne in Jerusalem. And so it is that the throne of David is likened to the moon as well as the sun. In other words, just as there are cycles of the moon — waxing and waning — so too has the throne of David seen times of glory and times of diminishing. Interestingly, David was the 14th  generation from the patriarch Abraham, corresponding to 14 days in the lunar cycle. That means Solomon was the 15th generation which corresponds to the 15th day of the lunar cycle when the moon is full and at its brightest. It is not a coincidence then that during Solomon’s reign the kingdom of Israel was at it zenith.

Not long after Solomon’s death the kingdom of Israel, like the moon, began to wane until it finally disappeared and its people taken into captivity. In other words, just like the moon, it was concealed in darkness. However, though it disappears from sight, the moon is still there — just waiting to be restored. And on that note, I’ve always found it fascinating that, once the moon enters its concealed phase of the cycle, it typically reappears on the third day! The point is, God is forever true; David’s Throne remains and will shine as the sun when Messiah, the Son of David, restores the Kingdom of Israel and rules from Jerusalem. It is as certain as the sun and moon, these faithful witnesses God has placed in the heavens, for it is written, “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1).
