Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; mercy and truth go before Your face. (Psalm 89:14)
In previous verses, the psalmist establishes the fact that God is sovereign over the entirety of His creation, i.e. the heavens and the earth. In this verse the composer goes on to underscore the eternal element of God’s dominion. He acknowledges that God’s Throne is permanent because it is based on eternal principles that define His character and holiness. In spite of the flaws that exist in the Universe — all brought on by man’s disobedience — it will continue to exist because He exists. It will continue and, in due time, be restored to its original intent because the Creator is righteous, just and merciful.
On that note, it is written that, “In mercy the throne will be established; and One will sit on it in truth, in the tabernacle of David, judging and seeking justice and hastening righteousness” (Isaiah 16:5). The One referred to is, of course, the Messiah. He comes to repair and restore what mankind has dismantled and corrupted, not with revenge as the goal, but to uphold truth so that justice and righteousness may fill the earth as it was in the beginning. Again, His Throne is founded upon these eternal attributes and so it is that His reign will serve to return these values to their prominence.
Seeing that truth, righteousness and justice are the underpinnings of His Kingdom, as citizens of that Kingdom, we are challenged to embrace and exhibit these same attributes in our life. In His Word, we are commanded to seek His righteousness (Matthew 6:33) and to follow what is just (Deuteronomy 16:20). Furthermore, we are promised that if we do these things, we will live, multiply and prosper according to His Will. Therefore, if we wish to live an abundant life and propagate good things to and for our children, then we must treasure, above all others, the values and attributes that will endure — righteousness, justice, mercy and truth.
