The humble shall see this and be glad; and you who seek God, your hearts shall live. (Psalm 69:32)
I believe it is fair to say that, for the most part and for the longest time, God has been hidden from mankind. That is not to say He can’t be detected or found, for as Yeshua said, “Seek and you shall find.” More specifically Paul said, “what may be known of God is manifest … for since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen” (Romans 1:19-20). Still, I would suggest that for most of humanity — especially those of “proud countenance who do not seek God for He is in none of his thoughts” (Psalm 10:4) — His Presence has remained in the shadows and His influence on human affairs unnoticed.
On the other hand, there have been a few times when God displayed His glory for all to see; Israel’s experience at Mount Sinai is one of those times. But let’s be honest — events such as those are definitely the exception and not the rule. Nevertheless, there has always existed a remnant of people who have looked for Him; and because they pursued the Lord with all their heart, these few caught a glimpse of His Hand at work. To these and everyone who truly wants to find Him, He said, “You will find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). And when they find Him, as David said, they will be glad and their hearts will be revived.
When it comes to this topic, I can’t help but think of what Yeshua said about Abraham: “Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad” (John 8:56). This wasn’t without reason; Abraham was a man who persistently sought the Lord and committed himself fully to doing what was pleasing unto God. Because He believed God to be faithful, he lived his life always looking ahead for the promise and he was not disappointed. If true for Abraham, then it is true for us as well; if we seek His face with all of our heart, we will find Him — we will see His hand at work.
There is coming a day when God’s Presence in this world will no longer be in the shadows but will be revealed for all to see. As it is written, “Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him” (Revelation 1:7) — including those who have ignored His sovereignty. But on that day, those who have humbled themselves before Him and endeavored to comprehend and live according to His ways will, as was said of Abraham, see His day and rejoice. What a glorious day when we shall see Him as He is!
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
