Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)
Within Jewish commentaries, there is an abundance of parables that give insight into how Judaism considers specific Scripture. One such parable helps to explain the verse above.
A weary traveler was walking along the road carrying a heavy pack. A wagon driver happened upon him and offered him a ride. The hitchhiker gladly accepted the offer and climbed aboard. After some time had passed, the driver realized that his passenger still had the heavy bag on his shoulders, prompting him to ask why he still held onto the burden seeing there was plenty of empty space in the wagon. His passenger replied that, while he appreciated the ride, he didn’t want to bother the man with having to carry his burden as well. The driver responded, “Don’t you realize that if I’m carrying you, I’m also carrying your load?”
The point is, so many people walk around straining under various burdens that the Father in Heaven is more than willing to help us with. We believe in God and believe that He has redeemed us and given us the hope of eternal life. However, many who believe for that have a hard time believing that He will provide for what we need to make it in this life. In other words, if He can save our soul, can He not also provide for our physical needs? Is anything impossible for God?
As believers, we aren’t promised a life without challenges; to the contrary, we are reminded that we will suffer tribulations. But at the same time, we have the promise that God will sustain us through those problems and will give us what we need to function in this fallen world. As David said, “He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.” In other words, God will give us the spiritual wherewithal and stamina to endure whatever life throws at us. Furthermore, He will give us our daily bread and provide for our physical needs; as Messiah said: “Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things” (Matthew 6:32).
As believers, we acknowledge that He has already helped us when He found us and offered to take us to our destination. Still, if you haven’t already, consider letting go of the load and burden He found you with and let Him carry that as well. As it is written; “Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
