You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light. (Psalm 36:8-9)

Scripture reveals from the beginning that, for life to exist, there must be a source of water — it is an absolute necessity. In the beginning, the surface of the earth was watered by a mist that went up from the ground; the garden that God Himself planted was watered by a river that ran through its midst. As mankind established villages and cities, it was almost always established in relation to a viable water source, whether it be a river, a spring or a well. That brings us to consider an important conversation that Messiah had with a certain Samaritan woman as she came to fetch water from a well dug by Jacob centuries before. More specifically, it prompts us to consider a particular statement made by the Messiah.

As the conversation continued, He said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:13-14). In short, man has a continuous need to be refreshed with water which means that we can only find temporary satisfaction with what the world provides. One who yearns only for what the world has to offer will be unable to quench his thirst; like a man drinking salt water, he will grow thirstier with every swallow. In contrast only a drink from God, who is the fountainhead of living water, can truly satisfy that part of us that longs for the eternal. As it is written, “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation” (Isaiah 12:3).

You might be interested to know that the Hebrew word translated as “salvation” is yeshua. In other words, long before He was born in a manger, the Bible clearly stated that the Messiah Yeshua is our true and only source for things eternal. As David said, He is the fountain of life and light who gives us a drink from His resources. And so we will close with a statement made by the Messiah Himself, who said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:37-38).
