The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. (Deuteronomy 28:7)

Not only does obedience to God result in the blessing of provision, as we discussed in the previous devotion, but also protection from our enemies. God promised His people that anyone who would dare to come against an obedient Israel would be defeated — it might be even better to say, routed. The wording suggests the enemy may have marched against His people in a military column but they fled using the first path of escape they could find. The scene that comes to mind is what happened when Gideon’s 300 men went against the armies of Midian, Amalek and the people of the east — Israel’s enemies fled in disarray, turning upon one another as they ran.

There are many other examples of this complete victory over the enemies of God and where this promise to His people is reiterated. When God’s people walk in humility and obedience before Him, as their King and Master, He defends them, their family and their property. Furthermore, He puts the fear of His people upon their enemies as it is written, “Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you” (Deuteronomy 28:10). Of course, all of these benefits are for those who are His true servants; it’s a different story for those who rebel against Him.

As for you and me, it’s not often that we have to worry about an army of hostile invaders coming into our land to burn and pillage. However, we do have an enemy who wishes to steal, kill and destroy. In fact, the Adversary of our soul is a far greater adversary than those of flesh and blood. As His people, we can safely conclude that the promise to Israel holds true for us today — when we submit ourselves to His will, we reap the benefits and blessings including protection from our enemies. So then, we will conclude our thoughts with this familiar passage:

“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me, says the Lord” (Isaiah 54:17).

Blessings and Shalom,
