The works of the Lord are great, studied by all who have pleasure in them. His work is honorable and glorious, and His righteousness endures forever. (Psalm 111:2-3)
As was discussed in the previous devotion, the psalmist expressed a desire to praise the Lord in the company of those deemed to be upright. He longed to worship alongside those who were actively seeking the Lord; those who were searching for the “wealth” and “treasures” promised to those who diligently pursue their Creator (see Proverbs 8:21). In keeping with that theme, the psalmist acknowledges that there is great reward in striving to ascertain and understand the “works of the Lord.” His honor, glory and eternal righteousness is there, waiting to be revealed to all “who have pleasure in them.”
To accentuate the psalmist’s point, let us consider another type of person — the rigid, analytical intellectual. Regarding the creation, a detached observation which responds only to cold, hard facts may see the world strictly in a scientific manner. That is not to say that true science contradicts the Word of God (actually, it continually verifies it) but it is to say that this type of person tends to pay attention only to what they can see and observe with the naked eye. Their scientific analysis often fails to see the Divine design that is imprinted on the natural world.
In other words, to truly see and appreciate the glory of God as revealed in His creation, one has to be willing to seek, to search and even explore beyond what one sees with the natural eye. People of faith are able to see the tangible and discern the manifestation of the world’s “hidden” Creator. All that is necessary is a genuine desire to find God. When a person possesses that longing, they will be able to see the fingerprint of God on every molecule and atom within the universe. That is the person who can boldly exclaim, “The works of the Lord are great; His work is honorable and glorious, and His righteousness endures forever.”
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
