Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples! (Psalm 105:1)

According to the Scripture, David composed this psalm to commemorate bringing the Ark of the Covenant from the house of Obed Edom to the city of Jerusalem. The Biblical account of this great day of celebration describes David as “dancing before the Lord with all his might,” whirling about and playing music (2 Samuel 6:14-16). His composition, offered on such a jubilant day, was intended to encourage all those who joined in this procession to honor God and to give thanks for His blessings. How hopeful it must have been to those who witnessed this scene — to see the Ark of the Lord being taken to a place prepared especially for it, and most importantly, to anticipate the Lord’s Presence resting upon it.

Obviously, David was not shy about worshiping the Lord even if others were taken aback by his expressions of devotion. The Bible tells us that his own wife rebuked him for his display to which he replied, “I will play music before the Lord. And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight” (2 Samuel 6:21-22). In other words, he didn’t care who saw and heard, he was determined to give thanks to the Almighty, to call upon His Name and abase himself before the Lord.

As followers of Yeshua, part of the mandate given to us is to bear witness that He is the risen Messiah and Son of the Living God. As we go about our daily lives, we are to broadcast the Good News and spread His fame throughout the world, making disciples as we go. In turn, they are to propagate the Good News among those within their sphere of influence. As we strive to spread His fame, it is critical that we walk righteously as a testament to the fact that His ways and deeds are righteous, profitable and true. As Messiah said, we must let our light shine before men, “that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). We shouldn’t be ashamed to call upon Him and we should never hesitate to brag on Him when we have the opportunity. As David encouraged all who serve the Lord, give thanks to the Almighty and “make known His deeds among the peoples.”
