May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works. (Psalm 104:31)

In the beginning, after the Lord had finished the work of Creation, the Bible says that “God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good” (Genesis 1:31). That is to say, He was pleased with the result of His work, a fact validated by the blessing He bestowed upon the crown of His Creation, mankind. As it is written, “God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it’ ” (Genesis 1:28). However, there have been times in history when God was not pleased at all with His creation, particularly man.

In the days leading up to the flood of Noah, the Bible says that “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth … and the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart” (Genesis 6:5-6). As we know, His displeasure led to the destruction of the world that existed at that time, sparing only Noah and his immediate family. Understanding this, might it be that David said, “may the Lord rejoice in His works” because he knew that if the Lord was not pleased the world might return to chaos and void? In other words, it is in our best interest for the Lord to pleased with what He sees in our life so that He will “rejoice over you to do you good and multiply you” (Deuteronomy 28:63).

That brings us to this point: there is a day coming when the Lord will, once again, rejoice over His people and all of His mighty works. It is written that “the Lord will again rejoice over you for good” (Deuteronomy 30:9). It is understood that this speaks of the Messianic era when Yeshua rules from His Throne in Jerusalem and restores order to the creation. In that day, when all things corruptible have been removed, joy will be restored to all the earth and the Lord will look with satisfaction upon His works. As it is written, “He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17). And so, may we His people, rejoice in Him with singing and express our undying love for Him, and may the glory of the Lord endure forever!
