He sends the springs into the valleys; they flow among the hills. They give drink to every beast of the field. (Psalm 104:10-11)

There are many skills employed by mankind to make our lives more comfortable and prosperous, so many in fact, it would be impossible to list them. But have you ever considered that we didn’t develop these skills on our own? Have you given thought to the fact that, long before man saw the need for designing and planning, or for architecture and engineering, the Creator had already established the standard for these disciplines? In the verses above, David acknowledges that the Almighty, who is the Master Engineer, designed the world’s water supply to serve all mankind’s needs, provided we did not tamper with His plan.

As we discussed in the previous devotion, He causes the waters that form the seas to be gathered together, thus allowing dry land to appear and produce vegetation that would sustain other life forms, including man. To ensure that His plan would succeed, He enclosed the seas and forbid them to cross the boundary He had established. Now consider: these huge bodies of water are relatively still when compared to the free flowing rivers and springs that “give drink to every beast of the field.” In other words, what usually occurs when a body of water — a pond or lake — remains still? They grow stagnant, swampy and deadly. God made the seas salty in order to prevent this outcome, and at the same time, established that the waters we need to survive would be free to flow and void of those things that could harm us.

It is abundantly obvious that the Almighty has orchestrated every detail in Creation — many of which we can observe, and some that we can’t observe. Furthermore, every detail plays its part in making life for you and me possible — nothing has been overlooked. Applying this principle to our individual existences, we can be sure that all that He engineers and orchestrates for us is in our best interest and allows for an abundant life. Whether we understand His ways or not — whether we like it or not — is beside the point. He knows what He is doing and, in time, will reveal the purpose for the discipline He has ordained for us.

If He is so precise as to salt the ocean’s water to preserve the life contained therein, and is diligent to make sure our drinking water isn’t salted, can He not make certain that provision for every need is available to me while I sojourn on this earth? Yes He can and He does, and for that, we should continually acknowledge His greatness.
