Clouds and darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. A fire goes before Him, and burns up His enemies round about. (Psalm 97:2-3)

Because God suffers long with mankind, especially the wicked, and because God is seemingly quick to correct His people, it is easy for people to question God’s fairness. When we see poverty, suffering and calamity, some will point an accusative finger at God and lay the fault at His feet. As His people, we know that God isn’t unjust but that He is good; as it is written, “Every good gift and perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

Indeed, there is no variation — or to put it in plain English, wishy washiness — in the Father of Lights. He doesn’t treat people preferentially in the way that men do; He is no respecter of persons. In fact, as I’ve already mentioned, if anything, He is harder on His people than He is the rest of the world because we are His children. Therefore, it is firmly established that He is good, just and true all the time. As the psalmist says, the foundation of His eternal Throne is righteousness and justice, which is to imply that everything “built” upon that foundation will also be right and just — it cannot be any other way.

Moses declared that, “His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, a God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He” (Deuteronomy 32:4). This may not be evident to all presently, but there is coming a day when His long suffering with the wicked will expire — “He by no means excuses the guilty” (Exodus 34:7). As the psalmist said, “A fire goes before Him, and burns up His enemies round about.” The destruction of others is not something we should look forward to with glee, nevertheless, it is a settled fact. When God judges the wicked and establishes justice in the world, once and for all, men will know that the Almighty is good, true and holy. The outcome is the restoration of bring peace, harmony and prosperity to the world and that, ladies and gentlemen, is something all of us can look forward to. In the meantime, let us do our part as His people to exhibit righteousness and truth in our life and to pursue justice — His justice in the earth.

Blessings and Shalom,
