For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands. O Lord, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep. (Psalm 92:4-5)

Today, let us consider one of the fundamental ways the Almighty is distinguished from mankind; man makes and God creates. While we can formulate ideas, articulate them to others, write them down and then cause them to become a reality, we are completely dependent on things that are already at our disposal. In other words, we can build a house but we must have the wood, stone and metal that comes from the earth to make it happen. None of us have the power or authority to cause something to come into being — only God is capable of creating in that sense.

Now let’s consider this: in the animal kingdom, there are myriad species of animals, birds and fish, and yet, with all of that diversity, there are no two species which are exactly alike. There may be many similarities but there are always important distinctions that set the species apart from the other. On the other hand, when we manufacture something the tendency is to make one just like the other. For instance, we mint coins from a mold, and with a few exceptions, the coins will be almost identical. However, though all men were minted in the mold of Adam, so to speak, no two men are identical; there are and have been billions of people and no two are exactly the same.

It is mind boggling to consider the enormity and vastness of God’s handiwork. Just these few examples of the diversity that exists within His Creation is enough for one to be overwhelmed with the greatness of our God, but then there is this — we are His most beloved creation, made in His image and His likeness and designed to do His Will. It is written, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works” (Psalm 139:14). That being so, it is incumbent upon us to consider His purpose for our existence and then conform to that purpose. The rest of Creation instinctively and consistently conforms to His Will, why shouldn’t we? And when we do, the words of the psalmist are fulfilled — “Your work has made me glad; I will triumph in the works of Your hands.”

Blessings and Shalom,
