Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:12)

Before the flood of Noah men lived for hundreds of years, meaning that there was ample time and opportunity for God to be revealed to mankind. In that prediluvian period, men had much more time to seek the wisdom that comes from above, and I have no doubt that many of them did. However, as man’s days became shortened to seventy years — and if by reason of strength, eighty — so did the span of time in which they could gain a heart of wisdom.

In comparison to those who lived for centuries, not to mention eternity, our sojourn on this earth is very short. Not only is it short but the time we do have is filled with cares and woes that drain our energy and attention, making it difficult to focus on heavenly matters. Therefore, to compensate for the limited opportunity to learn of God’s ways, Moses prayed that the Lord would intensify His revelation to us so that we could better comprehend His truth.

None of us are privy to just how many days of life are allotted to us; knowing that, we should all be motivated to use each day in a way that pleases our Heavenly Father. It is written that if we seek, we shall find; if we knock the door will be opened to us. Therefore, it behooves us — for our sake and the sake of our children — to pursue the knowledge of the Lord, to gain understanding of His Word and acquire the wisdom that comes from on High that we may know how to walk upright before Him and all men. As it is written, “Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me” (Psalm 25:4-5). Amen.

Blessings and Shalom,
