For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory. No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. (Psalm 84:11)

As stated above, God will not withhold good things from His people. But this notion prompts the question: What do we consider good and what does our Creator regard as good? When we think of all the good things God might grant us, what first comes to mind? My first thoughts are peace, health and prosperity. According to what is revealed in Scripture, it isn’t unlawful to desire such things as long as all is in accordance with the will of God. But it is also revealed in Scripture that things we wouldn’t want — e.g. suffering, hardship and lack — are sometimes allowed to touch our lives for our good.

It is in those times, especially, that the Lord be our sun and shield — our light and our protection. He gives us illumination to navigate the dark times and shields us from those things that could destroy us completely. He does so because He is on our side. He wants us to overcome and prosper according to the promise He has given to all who follow Him. So it is important that we understand that, from His perspective, anything that provokes growth and maturity; anything that promotes the advancement of His Will for our life is good. It is good even if in our carnal moments, we consider it to be bad.

No one who follows the Lord sets out to fail; in our heart of hearts we desire to overcome. But if we are to be Overcomers, then obviously, there must be obstacles and adversaries to overcome — we tend to forget that part. But in those times, He has promised that His grace is sufficient to see us through the ordeal, and when we emerge from the trial, His glory will be seen upon us. As it is written, “The Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you” (Isaiah 60:2). Amen!

Blessings and Shalom,
