The Lord gave the word; great was the company of those who proclaimed it. Kings of armies flee, they flee. (Psalm 68:11-12)

There is a firmly entrenched belief within Judaism that the original language for all men was Hebrew. Until God confounded the languages at Babel, it is believed that men spoke exclusively in the Holy Tongue, and even though the languages were divided, all languages (seventy according to tradition) were derivatives of Hebrew. Through time, the languages were corrupted so as to conceal this fact, nevertheless, there remains in every language known to man, a Hebrew thread that connects back to what God intended for man in the beginning.

This fascinating view is accentuated by what is said to have happened when God shook the earth and spoke from Sinai. It is believed that when God’s voice thundered from the mountain, He spoke primarily in Hebrew; however, His Word manifested as seventy flames (tongues) of fire. In other words, God spoke in every language known to man because He wanted all of mankind to hear. It is believed, in fact, that the sound of God’s Voice resonated throughout the entire world, every nation hearing His Word. Why would He do this? Because He desired to draw all men back to Him.

As a kingdom of priests, Israel’s call was to continue proclaiming His Word to the nations so that the Creator’s will and purpose for the nations might come to pass. In short, the more people who receive the Word, the more there will be to proclaim the Word throughout the earth. And because men and women through the ages have answered the call that went out at Sinai — the same call that was reaffirmed on the Day of Pentecost in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago — multitudes have come to believe in the God of Israel. People’s lives have been transformed, nations have been positively impacted and the trajectory of history has been altered to conform to the Will of the Creator.

Obviously, not all have responded favorably to His Word; nevertheless, as a royal priesthood, it is our mission to proclaim His praises. As mentioned in previous devotions, there is coming a day when God’s Voice will once again shake the earth and the heavens. In that day what stands and what falls will be determined by how we respond to His Voice. Hills will melt like wax at His Presence; kings and kingdoms resistant to His Word will flee and will fall. But those who rejoice at the sound of His Voice and gladly receive His Word will be permitted to stand and declare the goodness of God. Until then, it remains our duty, with one voice and in one accord, to call men to return to their Maker; to exalt the name of the Messiah that He might draw men unto Himself.

Blessings and Shalom,
