Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth! Sing out the honor of His name; make His praise glorious. Say to God, “How awesome are Your works! (Psalm 66:1-3)
The nations of the earth are slow to acknowledge God’s sovereignty and glory, and that’s putting it mildly. In reality, they are more inclined to mock the notion that the God of Israel is to be honored and, in turn, they are quick to mock and ridicule His people. Therefore, it falls to His people to raise our voices above the din and proclaim His glory in the world. Whether in times of difficulty or deliverance, the Name of the Lord is to be praised because, unlike the rulers of this world, He does not ebb and flow with the times — His glory is authentic and eternal.
Where the kings and princes of this world are concerned, the honor they receive depends upon the acclaim of their subjects. If their subjects should cease to pay homage and submit to their will, the glory of human kings would be diminished. Let’s put it this way; how many kings and rulers who were hailed as being supreme and god-like have come and gone? Their bones lie silent in the dust. But the God of Israel lives; He still presides over His Creation and rules heaven and earth. His glory does not depend on humanity’s whims but is exhibited by all that He has created which is why, as His people, we are to lead the way when it comes to giving glory unto our Maker.
In fact, David compels us all to consider the works of God, because any reasonable and honest person would behold His handiwork and be compelled to offer Him praise. It is difficult for the average person to consider God’s incomprehensible glory directly; I believe that even God acknowledges that which is why He makes Himself known through His creation. As Paul said, “Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead” (Romans 1:20). So as we consider His awesome works, do not take them for granted but as the provocation to, once again, sing out the honor of His Name and make His praise glorious.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
