I will wait for You, O You his Strength; for God is my defense. My God of mercy shall come to meet me. (Psalm 59:9-10)

Waiting on God — it’s not always very easy to do. For us, time is always staring at us in the face, prompting consternation which, in turn, can provoke rash and impulsive deeds on our part. But the Almighty is not constrained by time because He exists outside of its’ limitations, and so as His servants, we must not allow ourselves to become servants of time — certainly not our self-imposed time lines and schedules.

Where David was concerned, he knew he was to be king but he didn’t know when that was to take place. In knowing this, he also knew that Saul’s days were numbered, and still, though presented with multiple opportunities to hasten the day, he refused to take matters into his own hands. Not only did he evade Saul’s pursuit, he guarded Saul’s life from being snuffed out by his own men. He was content to wait upon the Lord’s timing for what was to be and how it was to transpire. He believed wholly and unabashedly that God would defend him no matter how clever or persistent Saul proved to be — the king could never outmaneuver the King of kings.

In anticipation of David’s ascent to the throne of Israel, God worked on behalf of His servant David, meaning that His purpose for Israel countermanded any decree issued by Saul or any other man who wished to harm David. Likewise, you and I can have that same confidence — that God will work on our behalf — when we are committed to serving His purpose for our lives. There will be times when it seems that the enemy is prevailing and that it is unlikely for us to fulfill our purpose, but if we are willing to wait on the Lord for His plan to unfold, in due time, we will see His wisdom and our strength to carry on will be renewed and refreshed. And so it is, when we are content to wait on Him, time is on our side.

Blessings and Shalom,
