“Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 12:13)

Most everyone has assumed that when the blood was applied to the doorways of those who prepared for what was coming, that it was on the exterior. However, there are some rabbinical sources that claim the blood was applied to the inside of the doorway. On the practical side of things, this would have concealed what was done from the rest of the world but let’s consider the spiritual implications. Only that household and God would have known the blood was there! 

The Jewish commentator, Rashi, wrote that had an Egyptian firstborn wished to hide in a Hebrew home, they would have still died because it was not the blood, per se, that spared the firstborn of Israel — it was their trust in what the blood would accomplish that saved them. Because the blood was on the door as a sign, they trusted that God would keep His promise to spare them during the plague. In other words, it was not about outward appearances but what was on the inside of the house. Likewise, outward trappings of religion will not save us; our heart must be full of faith in the power of the Blood.

Messiah referred to this notion when He scolded certain religious people for their hypocrisy saying, “You clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean” (Matthew 23:25-26). All of us must be careful not to fall into the trap of religious thinking. Our garb and our gab will not matter much when we stand before Him to give an account; only a pure heart that is dedicated to the Almighty will matter in that day. So let us make certain that the Blood has been applied to the inside so that it is clearly visible to the One who looks, not upon the outward appearance, but the heart.
