Good Morning.
Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb. And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.” (Genesis 38:27-28)
If you really think about it, twins seem to run in Abraham’s family. This particular situation is reminiscent of Rebecca’s pregnancy and the struggle that was ongoing between Esau and Jacob. It seems there may have been another struggle between the two boys who would be known as Zerah and Perez. The firstborn, Zerah, which means “shining” or “brightness,” withdrew his hand and, all of a sudden, the other son, Perez, broke through. In fact, that is what the name Perez means — “to break through.”
The birth of these two boys is pregnant with prophecy, much of it to do with the Messiah, however, we will focus on this thought: out of something as sinister and unclean as how their conception came to be came something wonderful. Out of the darkness of man’s selfishness, light broke forth. It remind us what Paul said:
“We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
All of us have stories to tell that we don’t want to tell — it would be too embarrassing. Yet the One who knows all chooses to forget our past indiscretions and to view us as bearers of light — that is, if we have come to the source of Light and have been transformed from the former man to the new creation. It is Job who asked the question, “Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?” (Job 14:4). The answer is only one can do it. Our King is the only One who can bring forth His light from our darkness and turn our mistakes into something that works for our good. Let us then be grateful for all that He has done on our behalf and honor Him by living a life that is pleasing to Him.
