You called in trouble, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder. (Psalm 81:7)
This verse is written in such a way that it obviously intends for us to receive this as if the Lord was speaking to us directly, no doubt written under the inspiration of prophecy. As for the message: so often we pray to the Lord in private whispers. Yes, there are times we pray loudly and in public but I dare say that most of our heartfelt prayers — those pertaining to issues that touch us significantly — are conducted when we are alone with God, in the secret place. That is how it is with me; I pray as I’m driving down the road or when I’m walking in the backyard, quietly petitioning the Lord for favor and assistance.
Though our prayers may be offered in quiet tones and private places, that doesn’t mean the Lord answers them in the same way. By that I mean, when He answers, it may be with a thunderous display of His might and power. Consider the Hebrews in Egyptian bondage; how many prayers were offered up in hushed voices as the oppressor looked on God’s people with disdain and a whip? Yet when God answered those prayers, it was not with a whisper — it was with “an outstretched arm and with great judgments.” In other words, God answered their prayers in such a way that everyone, Pharaoh included, had to acknowledge the Lord’s favor upon them.
In this vein of thought, let’s consider the shofar once again; one end of the horn is small and narrow while the other — what is referred to as the bell — is larger and wider. What begins as nothing more than exhaled breath produces a thunderous sound that can be heard for great distances. Likewise our prayers, sometimes uttered under our breath, can reach Heaven and result in an answer that resonates throughout our lives and the lives of others — even through generations. God takes the smallest of our requests and amplifies His answer to us so that there is no doubt that He considers our struggles and, as a loving Father, delivers us from our trouble.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
